Now first off, I’m not a vegan…but this smoothie is. (I am dairy-free though 🙂
I have experience working in 2 different smoothie shops.
You could say I know my way around a blender…
I have adapted some of the high sugar smoothies you may think are healthy (but are really just skyrocketing your blood sugar) into super food machines.
It is really easy to get carried away with adding stuff in smoothies and they can get to be up to 1000 calories with as much sugar as a Frappuccino if you aren’t careful! I’m serious, it’s scary.
Keeping sugars down is so crucial when making smoothies, I try to keep all my sugar sources to only the fruit and added stevia if necessary.
Matcha Green Tea is a superfood powerhouse! It has a higher ratio of caffeine then regular steeped green tea, since it is pulverized green tea leaves made into powder. It is also packed with tons of antioxidants, helps improve skin health, supercharges your immune system and increases your energy and focus. If your interested, you can read more about the health benefits of matcha here.
The only thing is a lot of matcha powder you see in stores especially the ones that say “Matcha Latte” are FULL of added sugar, because the pure matcha is pretty bitter. (Same with the matcha powder starbucks uses, it’s practically half sugar, to be honest. I worked there too.)
The real good stuff can be pretty pricey, but I have searched and found a HUGE bag of it that lasts me forever and a day, it’s on Amazon prime, it’s 100% Organic and under $20!
This is my favorite breakfast smoothie, or anytime smoothie really.
It’s got all the creamy goodness of a matcha green tea latte without all the sugar, and extra nutrients. Ingredients*
1 cup nut/coconut/soy milk (I prefer unsweetened, the less added sugar the better)
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1+1/2 Tbsp unsweetened matcha green tea powder (I use Organic Starter Matcha)
1 Tbsp Stevia or Erythritol (I use Truvia, a combo of stevia+erythritol)
sprinkles of cinnamon
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (I use plant based, Purely Inspired Organic Protein)
1 generous handful of spinach
3/4 cup frozen pineapple chunks
1/2 cup frozen peaches (optional)
2-4 ice cubes for desired thickness
*** These measurements are estimates, I don’t measure my ingredients, I just eye ball them 😉 Play around with ratios for your perfect smoothie! I recommend starting with less and tasting it to add more till you find a perfect ratio for your tastebuds 🙂
This smoothie has enough protein and nutrients to be a meal replacement for me, I find it to be very filling and satisfying. I hope you do too!!
